Reality: Autism is a biologically caused brain disorder. It does run in families, however, and many mothers and fathers of autistic kids who seem very shy, socially awkward, or distant may themselves have very mild forms of autism.

-Most kids with autism never learn how to talk; they've no language skills.

Reality: Individuals with a classic autism analysis are sometimes non-verbal or nearly non-verbal. But the autism spectrum also includes extremely verbal individuals with extremely high reading skills. With early identification and intensive intervention, as many as 3/4 of children with autism are able to talk. Kids suffering from autism who never acquire spoken language often have severe mental retardation in addition to their autism, which makes the learning of language especially tough. With training, however, even these kids can often learn to communicate non-verbally.

-Autism Spectrum Problems are not inherited.

Reality: More and more families are being identified as having more than one member with an autism spectrum disorder. In fact, since so little was known about autism for so long, many families have a parent with an autism spectrum disorder that was either misdiagnosed or never recognized at all. Some families also have more than one sibling with autism.
