The term emetophobia itself is derived from the Greek word 'emesis' which means throwing up, and the term 'phobia', meaning a strong, crippling fear.. People who are afflicted by this condition are called emetophobes, meaning they have anxieties over coming in contact with vomit, or witnessing someone vomit, even if it's an imagined situation. Emetophobia treatment can be found, but science has yet provided a good description of this disorder.

The fear may extend to stimuli which are related to the feared object - for example, even being in a room where someone could have vomited, or the general fear of people who are sick. This fear is extended to any signs of vomit or vomiting in a wide variety of situations that causes the most problems to sufferers. One common example is needing to control how food is prepared and needing it to be clean.

The disorder commonly develops as a result of going through a long or violent bout of vomiting, or maybe just witnessing somebody vomiting regularly. This could happen if their mother was sick or was vomiting because she was pregnant. Some children are inclined to self-stimulatory vomiting and this is also a great risk factor. Going through gastrointestinal surgery is yet another risk factor. Some cases of this phobia have been due to mental disorders, or at least attributed so. Whatever causes it, it can indeed be cured and some methods have been shown to be effective. So emetophobia treatment is available in the marketplace

There is a well-known study by Angela L. Davidson who discovered that people with emetophobia have a higher than average level of perceived internal control over their daily lives - this is called an internal locus of control. The LOC - locus of control means where the person believes control comes from. An internal LOC shows that the person perceives control over a specific situation to be within their hands, and an outside, external LOC shows that they believe they have no control over their life and it's determined by external factors. Observe that this is a continuous scale, not a black-and-white classification.
